Kingsport wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What are a House Mouse's Mating Habits?
House mice are a common pest that many of us encounter in our homes. They tend to enter through tiny holes and spaces in between walls and doors. Like most household pests, house mice are rodents, and like most rodents, they are nocturnal. Their night activities mainly consist of eating. Mice tend to get extremely hungry during the dark hours. This hunger then turns into a desire to mate. Mice become sexually active around a month after birth. They then have the tendency to reproduce all year round.

Communication
Mice communicate with other mice of the same species by using urine as a tool. The apex of the male mice will disperse urine all around his territory. This urine acts as a sign to other male mice to stay clear of the area, as well as the female mice in it. The male mouse can sniff the female's pheromones during the mating period. Once this is done, he will need to fertilize her ASAP. To do this, he will give the mating call to lure her in.

Birth
Once the female is impregnated, the male will move to another female mouse. Meanwhile, the pregnant female mouse will prepare a nest for its incoming babies. You can generally notice this if you see pieces of chewed up wiring and other materials which the female mouse might need for the nest. Baby mice are blind, without fur or hair, and barely weigh one gram. Their blind period ends after fourteen days, after which they open their eyes. Following this period they will also grow hair.

Maternity
During the three week period following the next this time, the baby mice are totally helpless. Therefore, the mother needs to take total care of them. She needs to provide them with food as well as protection. Despite this, the mother may devour her own babies if she can't find any other food sources. After this period, the babies start protecting and feeding them, and after another two weeks, they develop sexual maturity.

Growth
Once they pass this stage, the young mice will move away from their mother. The alpha male mouse tends to see his male offspring as sexual threats, but not the females. Thus the female offspring stay near their mother's territory.

Lifespan
Pet mice have a lifespan of five years, but wild mice tend to live for about a year or two. Therefore, the same phenomena apply to house mice. These mice reproduce their entire lives, and a female mouse tends to mate as soon as she grows up her babies.

Conclusion
The process and mating behaviors of mice described above show that mice can reproduce quickly and plentifully. Therefore you need to implement proper measures for mice control. The nest measure is a precaution, which means that take relevant measures to ensure that mice don't enter your house.
